From the iconic 1968 unbranded Umbro shirt in which Rangers wore to win European Cup Winners’ Cup in, in 1972, to the second Castore home shirt celebrating the Club’s 150th year where we were a penalty kick away from winning the Europa League, this site aims to be both informative by providing an historical background to the shirts featured, as well as entertaining by taking a nostalgic look at some of the memories provoked by each shirt.
This particular period has been a rollercoaster ride of unimaginable highs and a few lows for the Club, with many of the greatest ever moments and achievements occurring during this time.
Following the Cup Winners’ Cup triumph, there were the treble winning of seasons 1975/76 and 1977/78, the Graeme Souness Revolution in 1986, the famous treble winning team of 1992/93 that were cheated out of a place in the very first Champions League Final, the clinching of 9-In-A-Row in 1996/97, the Dick Advocaat era which featured another treble in season 1998/99, the Alex McLeish era which featured yet another treble in season 2002/03 as well as the unforgettable ‘Helicopter Sunday’ in 1995, and finally Walter Smith’s return winning three Scottish League titles in a row after leading Rangers to the UEFA Cup Final in 2008.
The event of administration in 2012, and the circus that followed saw the Club on the brink, but with the will and sheer determination of the fans, adversity was overcome, and the Club completed the journey back to the top by securing it’s record 55th league title in season 20/21. Each shirt tells a many a story and provokes different memories for each of us.
I’m proud to have managed to gather at least one match version of every home shirt since 1968, a period spanning over 50 years. You’ll find the odd away shirt and goalkeeper jersey thrown in, as well as some match worn international shirts worn by some of the Rangers greats. Enjoy looking back…
