MATCH WORN / ISSUE

The introduction of this shirt signaled the first time a crest would appear on the famous blue jersey.  The white v-neck from the previous version was dispensed with and replaced by a blue round neck to make the shirt an all blue affair, with the exception of the crest stitched in white with a thin black edge.

Between 1968 and 1973 the traditional black socks with red tops were replace by red tops with white tops, with the former returning as the preferred choice again between 1973 and 1978.

Rangers won two trebles during this shirt’s tenure, in season 1975/76 and again in season 1977/78.  In the 1978 Scottish Cup Final, where Rangers defeated Aberdeen 2-1 to seal the fourth treble in their history, the shirt featured the famous Umbro diamond logo and game details stitched in white onto the shirt.

Rangers of course famously recorded their only major European triumph in this shirt, defeating Dynamo Moscow in Barcelona on 24th May 1972 to lift the European Cup Winners’ Cup.  Colin Stein scored one, Willie Johnston two…

In the flesh, this particular shirt is fitted and quite stretchy, making it more like the figure hugging shirts of today, albeit made with thicker material.  A white cotton number ‘5’ is stitched onto the reverse of the shirt.

The initials ‘D.J.’ are handwritten on the underside of the neck label, making it more than likely this shirt was worn by Rangers great Derek Johnstone.  Johnstone wore this number regularly during the early seventies.
