MATCH WORN / ISSUE

The famous Umbro diamond logo was a permanent fixture on this shirt, and this signaled the beginning of manufacturer’s logos appearing on Rangers’ shirts.  White cuffed sleeves with red and blue trim, with matching collar and blue v-neck somewhat radicalised the design.

Again the crest is stitched in white with a thin black edge, with the Umbro logo stitched in plain white.  A white cotton number ‘6’ is stitched on the back, and whilst several players predominantly wore this number during different periods of the four seasons it was worn, it is believed this shirt is linked to the period where Jim Bett was the regular number six.

Rangers dispensed with their traditional black socks with red tops again during this period, with all blue being the favoured option.

Rangers would go on to win two Scottish Cups (1978/79 and 1980/81) and three League Cups (1978/79, 1981/82 and 1982/83) during this spell.  The 1979 Scottish Cup Final had to go to two replays before Rangers finally triumphed over Hibernian by three goals to two.  The 1981 Scottish Cup Final, only went to one replay and would be the last to ever go to a replay, with extra time and penalties introduced from the following season.

Rangers emphatically beat Dundee United 4-1 in the replay, after a goalless first game that went to extra time.  Davie Cooper was the star of the show, putting in a superb individual performance, as well as scorer the opener and setting up the second and third goals.
