#9 ALLY MCCOIST
MATCH WORN VS ENGLAND
WEMBLEY STADIUM, LONDON, 15th JUNE 1996
This kit was altered was slightly for Euro 96. Firstly to conform with UEFA regulations, Scotland had to drop the purple trim with navy diamonds from the sleeves of the shirts as well as the shorts. Sleeve patches were also added, whilst squad names and numbers and small numbers on the front of the shirt had now became standard at major tournaments.
This shirt was Ally McCoist’s from a very memorable match against England, remembered as much for Gary McAllister’s penalty miss (saved by David Seaman), as it was for Paul Gascoigne’s goal and subsequent ‘dentist chair’ celebration. The match finished in a 2-0 defeat for Scotland in front of a crowd of 76,798 at Wembley.;
McCoist entered the match after 67 minutes as replacement for John Spencer, and swapped his shirt with Rangers team mate Paul Gascoigne at the end of the match. Gascoigne gifted the shirt to another squad member, and the shirt was sourced from that player’s collection, thus coming with impeccable provenance.
